Warning: This post contains spoilers from the Vampire Academy season 1 finale.

Vampire Academy didn’t hold anything back in its season 1 finale. Tatiana (Anita Joy Uwajeh), the Strigoi attacked and poisoned the Queen (Pik Sem Lim). Lissa was reunited with Andre Jason Diaz, only to see Christian’s (Andre Dae Kim), mother tear into her neck. He’s now a Strigoi! Sonya (Jonetta Kaiser) attacked Victor (J. August Richards). The hour ended with Rose (Sisi stringer) and Lissa leaving the human world. Tatiana is now blaming Lissa. But that’s not all!

EW spoke with co-creators Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntrye about some of the biggest book-to-screen changes they made in season 1 and where the story might go in a potential season 2. Vampire Academy has not been renewed yet. )

Andre is a Strigoi?!

Lissa’s reunion with her thought-to-be-dead brother was short-lived. He attacked him seconds after they hugged. By episode’s end, he had woken up Strigoi. “One of my biggest questions when I was a kid was: Who is in charge? Who is mobilizing these Strigoi Plec says Plec doesn’t know who is teaching them how to become more strategic. We knew we wanted our Strigoi to look more wild and primal than the ones in books. But, we also knew that the plot involved someone organizing them. The idea that the enemy of the show could be under one ruler was intriguing. Who better to be that ruler than someone who was born, raised, and bred as a king? It was too good to pass up. “

Tatiana’s evil turn

One of the biggest reveals of episode 9 was that Tatiana had been behind, not only Lissa’s family’s car accident, but all of the Strigoi’s recent plans. “In depthening Andre’s story, it was beginning to become clearer what Tatiana’s path would be,” MacIntyre states. “And then, we had many options about her background and the why of all this. As we continued to lock ourselves into the path we wanted, we realized that this woman could be strong, fierce, and very political. We’ll continue to learn more about her, but she’s still a mystery. This is a fun villain. It’s easy to be a villain on this show. “

Season 2

Although season 1 pulled from many of Richelle Mead‘s six books, there’s still plenty more material for a second season. MacIntyre states that they are still drawing from the books in various ways. “If we do some things that we’ve discussed, then we’re deepening or expanding some of these worlds that are covered in the books. What does it look like for the Communes in this world? We are expanding on things that were already covered in the books. We also have some new stuff in the works. “

Plec says, “The second book largely occurs at a school skiing trip, which would be an episode or two, and can’t really make up a whole season. This instantly opens up our ability take more freedom with the different elements of all the books. We finished season 1 right where book one began. It was so exciting to me that we get to tell the story about the girls out in the real world. That could be one episode or eight episodes. ” MacIntyre assures fans that “if you loved it in book series, it will be coming.” We don’t know when it will happen. ”

The Alchemists

The finale heard Dimitri (Kieron Moore) issue a warning to Rose about the alchemists, something that could certainly come up again in a potential second season. Plec states that the girls are going into the real world of humans and that we don’t know much about it. We know there is a human treaty, we know there are alchemists that erase evidence of vampire crimes, and we know Dimitri said, ‘If one appears, run.’ There is so much opportunity to use our girls to learn more about the history of this dominion and the threat to the human world. They will be blindly following it. “

Victor’s fate

No, you’re not supposed to know if Victor’s still alive by finale’s end. MacIntyre states that he likes the idea of ending a series in a question mark for everyone. “That’s what I want to leave my beautiful fans in. But I will say that we love Victor and J. August. “
