How one chef is using food to heal Buffalo after deadly mass shooting
The city of Buffalo is trying to return to normal following last week’s mass shooting at a Tops Supermarket that killed 10 Black people.
There to help the city heal is Chef Darian Bryan. Chef Darian Bryan opened a pop-up restaurant in the neighborhood, with proceeds going to the families of the victims.
” These people are in pain so I’m like you’re like you know what, food and love is what brings people together and I’m so thankful that I can bring a smile to their faces,” he said to CBS News.
Bryan, originally from Jamaica but a Buffalo staple, is Bryan. He has hosted many Jamaican pop-up events, and has also cooked for the Buffalo Bills. He also owns “The Plating Society”, a catering company.
On Wednesday, several Buffalo Bills players served thousands of meals, some prepared by Bryan, at the site of the shooting. Many people find that this supermarket is the only one they have access to.
” This community is where you will find the most Black people of Buffalo. Bryan stated that that’s where they all go and that’s the only grocery store for them. “That’s where they go all the time and that’s because there’s no produce there, so there are no healthy options.
Saturday’s attack hit close to home for Bryan. Bryan used to frequent the store before dropping his children at daycare nearby. He almost brought his family to the store the day of the shooting.
“I knew almost everyone who worked there,” he said.
He is looking for a permanent solution to feed people in a community. He wants to help the community through this dark time.
“It’s unbelievable that there is only one grocery shop on the eastside. This means that people have to travel far to get food. “Something must be done for these people. “
During an event on Friday, Bryan raised $20,000 for the victims and their families. He will continue to distribute free meals for the victims and their families next week.
