Former ambassador to Ukraine thinks Ukraine may win its war against Russia

This week, former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor joins chief Washington correspondent and “Takeout” host Major Garrett to discuss the war in Ukraine and what Washington can do to assist Kyiv.

Taylor is currently vice president, Russia & Europe at the U.S. Institute of Peace.

He predicted that the Russian invasion of Ukraine would end in victory for Ukraine, if the military continues to receive the non-lethal and lethal aid it requires. Taylor believes that the Ukrainians will rebuild their country but they won’t forget Russian cruelty.

“Ukrainians are disgusted at the Russians’ actions,” Taylor stated.

This episode was recorded on May 4, 2022.

Highlights

  • Can the Ukrainian military prevail? I believe they can win. They believe they can win, and they will win if they have the means to do so. We can provide them with the weapons, ammunition, fuel, and protective gear. They will win if they get the big and the small things. They won’t give up. They will not give up until they win. “
  • Russia has made Ukraine a hostile enemy on its border: “They’ll be a proud nation — independent, sovereign nation, after they prevail, after they win, after their victory. The Russians will be a formidable enemy of their neighbor for generations. This is a huge mistake by the Russians. Why would you want a hostile nation at your border? Why would you want a nation — the Ukrainian nation they hate? The Russians are hated by the Ukrainians for what they do. You can see why. It is cruel. It is shocking. It is shocking to see the extent of the Russians’ brutality towards the Ukrainian people. They will rebuild, but they won’t forget. “
  • Russia and use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons: “We all have to worry about that because President Putin has made what we would think of as irrational decisions before. If he’s in desperate straits, the Ukraine will push him back. Is he ready to use weapons of mass destruction? The answer is yes. We have to be prepared.”
  • U.S. Allies and the United States have provided Ukraine with real-time intelligence: ” We are essentially watching World War Two combat in real-time with overhead photos that allow us to see individual tanks from satellites. We can see individual trenches. We can see what’s going on. Open source, as you said. “
