Federal government braces for looming shutdown as Republicans clash

The nation’s four million federal employees could be forced to work without pay if Congress doesn’t either pass 12 bills to fund the government or pass a short-term fix. Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with House Republicans over the weekend to gain support, but a band of far-right Republicans are creating division in the party by threatening a shutdown over any temporary funding.
