ESPN, College Football Playoff Criticized As Peach Bowl Ends After Midnight

This scheduling was controversial on social media. It was the fourth consecutive year and the second time overall that the CFP semifinals were held on New Year’s Eve. Many viewers were disappointed that the second semifinal didn’t end by the time the clock struck 2023.

The original reason for scheduling was to not interfere with the Rose Bowl’s semifinals. After back-toback semifinals in 2015 and 2016, the CFP management committee decided not to schedule games on New Years Eve if it fell on a weekend.

The semifinals of 2021 and 22 were held on New Year’s Eve, as they fell on Friday and Saturday. The CFP games next year will be played on New Year’s Day, as the Rose Bowl will host another semifinal.
