Arsenal thrash Lyon in Women’s Champions League on opening night

The 2022-23 UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage started with a bang on Wednesday night.

The reigning champions Lyon were thrashed by Arsenal 5-1 at home.

Beth Mead, 48 hours after coming second in the women’s Ballon d’Or, scored twice for Arsenal in France.

Caitlin Fold also scored a brace for Gunners. Frida Maanum, Melvine Malard and other scorers at Groupama Stadium were also on the scoresheet.

Elsewhere in Group C, Juventus won 2-0 at Zurich thanks to strikes from Valentina Cernoia and Barbara Bonansea.

The other outstanding result Wednesday was in Group D, where Barcelona beat Benfica 9-0.

Asisat Oshoala, Geyse, Ana-Maria Crnogorevic, Patri Guijarro and Claudia Pina each scored twice last season for the runners-up.

Wednesday’s other result saw Bayern Munich come from behind to beat Rosengard in Germany.

Loretta Kulashi led the Swedish side to victory, before Carolin Simons and Linda Dallmann reacted for Bayern.
