Alfonso Ribeiro is learning the meaning of “take one for the team” the hard way.

The Dancing With the Stars host revealed on Friday’s episode of Live With Kelly and Mark that he recently suffered a concussion during his son’s youth baseball game, from being struck by a stray ball.

“I got concussed last week,” Ribeiro, 51, told hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. “I was standing off to the side and I’m putting someone’s number in my phone, and boom — a ball to the back of my head. Right in the back.”

Ribeiro added that he went “down” as soon as he was hit. “For like, three days, I’m like, ‘Huh? Wha?'” he said, jokingly adding, “My wife seems to think it was just me saying I didn’t want to do nothing at the house. It wasn’t that. It was a good hit.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Ribeiro said he was no longer coaching his son’s baseball team, though the concussion had nothing to do with it. “It is hard for me, though,” he said of coaching.

When asked what he does when his kids strike out, Ribeiro said he still roots for them in a positive manner: “Baseball is a game of failure, so the best players in history strike out or get out seven out of 10 times. It’s not a game that’s always going to work out for you. So failure is the tools you use for success.”

Ribeiro’s appearance on the talk show comes at a tumultuous time for Dancing With the Stars, which is set to premiere its 32nd season on Sept. 26.
