18-year-old dies after getting trapped in sand at New Jersey beach
An 18-year-old man died and his younger sister was rescued when a hole they were digging in the sand at a New Jersey beach collapsed. Levy Caverley, a Maine resident, was identified by the Toms River police.
Police responded to a call about two teens trapped in the sand shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday. They were able to rescue the 17-year-old girl and treat her at the scene. Her brother, however, died. Officials were still trying to recover Caverley’s body as of Tuesday evening.
The siblings were visiting from out of town with their family, and had spent the entire afternoon on the beach, according to police.
Toms River police stated that multiple neighboring agencies responded at the scene to assist with the rescue.
